On Tuesday August 16, 2006 a federal judge in San Francisco ruled that the two San Francisco Chronicle reporters must reveal who provided them with secret grand jury testimony of Barry Bonds and other athletes accused of steroid use.
On Thursday September 21, 2006 the two San Francisco Chronicle reporters, Lance Williams and Mark Fainaru-Wada, were sentenced to a maximum 18 months in prison for refusing to reveal the sources for stories, based on the leaked grand jury testomony.
Both sides have agreed to stay the ruling by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White pending an appeal to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco.
